Gaw Van Male Strengthens Estate Planning, Wine Law, Business and Real Estate teams with three new hires

September 19, 2016 Napa, Calif.Gaw Van Male, Napa’s premiere estate planning, wine and business law firm, has hired three new attorneys to strengthen their growing estate planning, wine business and real estate groups.

Caitlin Connell joins Gaw Van Male as an associate attorney in the wine law, business and real estate group. A Napa native, Connell earned her undergraduate degree from UCLA and returned to the Bay Area to earn her law degree from University of California Hastings School of Law. As a law student, she interned at the Napa County Superior Court for the honorable Judge Raymond Guadagni (retired).

Connell worked at a prominent Pleasanton firm as a litigator before joining Gaw Van Male, specializing in all aspects of commercial and residential real estate transactions. She also assisted clients in disability discrimination claims and employment contract disputes. Connell served on the executive committee of the Trial Practice Section of the Alameda County Bar Association, contributing to the Section’s quarterly newsletter and continuing legal education events. She participates in the Women’s Section and Barristers Section of the Napa County Bar Association and the Contra Costa County Bar Association.

Doug Mitchell, a native of Northern California, joined Gaw Van Male as an associate attorney in the wine law, business and real estate group. Mitchell earned his undergraduate degree from California State University at Sonoma and earned his law degree from the University of California Davis School of Law. After law school, Mitchell joined a firm in Monterey focused on real estate and business litigation. At Gaw Van Male, Mitchell will focus on all manner of business and real estate transactions, particularly in the wine industry.

Karen Blank returns to Gaw Van Male as an associate attorney, having worked at the firm more than ten years ago as an associate under Dave Gaw. She joins the estate planning group to support probates, court proceedings and conservatorships, trust administration and more. Most recently, Blank served as general counsel for the Virginia Tech Foundation managing mature bequests and donor gifts through estates and trusts. Blank also worked for the Los Angeles Superior Court for six years as a probate attorney, as staff attorney for the Yolo County Superior Court and in private practice in Yolo County.

Blank received the Ralph M. Kleps award from the California Supreme Court and Distinguished Service Award from Yolo County Superior Courts, recognizing her outstanding service to the state. She is a member of the Trust and Estates Section of the California State Bar.


Gaw Van Male Adds New Trust Administration Associate Robert Ashley

March, 2016—Robert Ashley joined Gaw Van Male in March of 2016 as an Associate Attorney for Trust Administration and Basic Estate Planning.  Robert graduated from the University of Montana with a B.A. in Journalism and earned his J.D. at the University of the Pacific, with Distinction. Robert is based in the firm’s Napa office.


Gaw Van Male Names Two New Partners

January 8, 2016, Napa, Calif.—Gaw Van Male, Napa-based estate planning and wine law firm has announced Liz Conemac and Erik Lawrence as partners.

Conemac practices in the areas of basic and advanced estate planning and trust and probate administration. She is the chair of the Trust and Estates Section of the Napa County Bar Association and Treasurer for the Young Lawyer Division of the Napa County Bar Association and was named Young Lawyer of the Year for 2015. She joined the firm in 2002, working first as a receptionist, then as a legal assistant prior to attending law school. Conemac received her law degree from UC Davis School of Law in 2011 and was hired as an associate at the firm.

Lawrence practices wine law, mergers, sales, financing and acquisitions, business governance and operations and real estate law. He serves on the board of directors for the Napa Valley College Foundation and is a graduate of Leadership Napa Valley’s Class 24. He is a graduate of UC Davis where he received his bachelor’s and law degree. Prior to law school, he spent seven years as a commercial banker. Lawrence began his legal career in San Francisco, and later relocated back home to Napa where he initially worked for a local firm specializing in wine law. He served as in-house counsel for Trinchero Family Estates before joining GVM in 2014.

Gaw Van Male Partner Jamie Watson Achieves Certification

Napa, Calif.—Jamie Watson, a partner at Napa Valley and Fairfield-based estate planning and wine law firm Gaw Van Male, has completed certification in estate planning, trust and probate law. Watson’s certification adds strength to the firm’s robust estate planning services in Napa and Solano Counties. Watson was named partner at the firm earlier this year.

Watson joined Gaw Van Male in 2008 as a senior associate with a law degree from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 2008. He specializes in the areas of wealth preservation, elder law, and business succession serving clients in Solano county where he serves on the board of PACE Solano. In addition, Watson works as a lead wine industry law attorney for Gaw Van Male. Watson is a frequent lecturer at seminars on Medi-Cal planning, veteran’s benefits, special needs trusts and high end estate planning.

Gaw Van Male Adds Trust Administration Associate Marc Joyce

October, 2015, Napa, Calif.—Marc Joyce joined Gaw Van Male as a trust administration attorney in August 2015. Joyce received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in 2014 and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California at Irvine in 2008. He spent years between his B.A. and J.D. as a legal assistant and office manager at a law firm. Joyce is based in the firm’s Napa office.
